Metropolitan Museum of Art Studies One&Only Ocean Club’s French Cloisters

Recently, staff from New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art traveled to the One&Only Ocean Club to study a French cloister which, after partial destruction during the Reformation and the French Revolution, was salvaged and rebuilt in The Bahamas. This research is being conducted by a recipient of an Annette Kade fellowship, under the supervision of a curator of the Cloisters museum. Researchers took precise pictures and measurements of all the cloister elements (capitals, columns and bases) in order to help establish their original provenance. Initial research suggests that the cloisters come not uniquely from Montrejeau as has traditionally been said, but from several distinct monasteries in southern France.
